who has ideas for a baby shower game?

its going to be a big shower so it needs to be the kind of game that can be played with lots of people and or the kind that can go on while everyone is mingling rather than everyone stopping to play the game.

I received at least five compliments on said footwear.

On an unrelated note, I can no longer walk because I've lost the feeling in my toes.

P.S. Did anyone have to wear saddle shoes to school as a kid? I did and every year on the first day of school I thought that my feet were going to revolt and possibly fall of my body, but those shoes looked super cute and lasted forever. I'm pretty sure that's where my problem began.

The Ritual

I don't know how many of you watched the show Gilmore Girls, but there is a great episode where Emily and Lorelei are getting ready to go to bed and Rory is watching them both unintentionally do the same beauty before bed routine. Lorelei catches on and stops immediately. It is a moment that I think many daughters throughout the ages have had, the discovery that you've accidentally or intentionally started taking after your mother.

I have been thinking about my beauty rituals (or current lack thereof). What sticks out most in my mind is what I used to do every Friday for four years of high school. Every Friday rain or shine, I woke up, put on my cheerleading uniform, pulled up a pair of awesomely high socks, my "cheer" shoes and tied a white grosgrain ribbon in my hair before heading off to school. Then, after classes were over the real makeover would begin, green and gold and blue shades of eyeshadow (not as garish as it sounds), sparkles, blush, lots of mascara, and enough Aqua Net to put a hole in the Ozone layer. It may have been over the top, but there was never a night when I didn't feel like I looked my best when I walked out to cheer for a game.

Now, I barely have time to throw on a coat of mascara and lipgloss before I sprint out the door. Lately, I've noticed that my devotion to cute heels has even waned, and I've been opting for flats more and more. I've also noticed that I feel less and less confident about how I look. It wasn't about the shellac, so much as, taking the time to care for myself. Starting in college, when late nights studying or giggling or dancing led to much later mornings wearing sweatshirts and UGG boots around campus I stopped making my beauty ritual a priority.

For the month of August, I want to create a new and improved beauty ritual to start off everyday feeling confident. Does anyone have any suggestions or favorite parts of their morning ritual? I've got my own list of favorite products but I'm always open to trying new things. Do you have a favorite product that is part of your beauty routine? Is there some part of your routine that you learned from your mother? Or that you hope to someday share with your little girl?

I'll do some sort of updates at the beginning and end of next month to share my plans and how it all turns out.

I made the tragic mistake of deleting picassa web albums on my google+ account. I don't use picassa for photo editing and I had no idea what they were or that they were linked to my blogs hosting all the images I had ever posted. now all those images are gone.

I am dying.

I thought I'd share this, I am so incredibly grateful to be a part of a church that really sees our troubles in today's society and seeks a way to ease them. I have not suffered from an eating disorder myself but I certainly do feel a tremendous pressure concerning appearance. Being a new mom changes you a lot, there is a significant growing that you must do in order to nurture your little one and while most of that comes naturally and simply, the physical changes you undergo are not always pretty. I'm not even sure what size I am now but I know that with time and exercise and the love of my heavenly father all things are possible: even skinny jeans.

"Women everywhere struggle with eating disorders ranging from poor self-esteem to extreme starvation and/or bingeing. The fact that there is a stigma that accompanies these issues makes it hard for these women to find help or even feel comfortable telling their husbands and family about their struggles. In case you haven't heard, this fall, Banana Republic will be offering all of the outfits above and quite a few more in collaboration with genius Mad Men stylist Janie Bryant. First of all , if you aren't watching Mad Men, head to Blockbuster, Netflix, Redbox or Apple TV and get started. As if brilliant writing and directing aren't enough the clothes steal almost every scene.

And I can't wait to actually by some pieces inspired by my favorite show. Her incredibly wearable and modern take on late fifties/early sixties fashion has me head over heels, the epitome of vintage chic. Not only does Ms. Bryant know how to style Betty, Joan, Peggy, Trudie and so many other beloved characters to a "t", she also give great style advice in her book: The Fashion File. if you are like I was until a few weeks ago (totally out of the loop on what pinterest really is or what it is about) let me explain:

its essentially like an online vision board.

you create your own digital board with virtual pins.

when you see something on a blog or website you like you simply "pin it" (by clicking one button that you download to your book mark bar) to one of your boards (home, style whatever...) and voila a picture is added to your board with a link back to where you found it. the link back is crucial.

you can also re-pin from other pinterest member's boards and follow friends.

its a fantastic way to stay organized (opposed to saving images to a folder on your desktop like I used to do) and get creative ideas.

March 11, 2011 a massive earthquake devastated Japan and ruined over half the country. My sister is living in Tokyo and was in the subway on her way home from work when the quake his her small sector of Chiba Shin-Urayasu and engulfed her in one of the largest world disasters to date.

We have all read the news, seen the photos, watched the video clips, and read the miraculous stories of miracles and survivors. Sadly, the reality is that this is not a cinderella story and not everyone gets a lucky ending. This video was filmed by those who made it out on time and documented the trauma of watching their city, community, and homes reduce into rubble through the vigorous waves of the storm.

As you watch this I implore you to think of your own lives; your homes, families, community, neighbors, friends. These men and women sat helpless as they watched the accumulation of their lives drift away and come crashing down around them. All the dreams, hope, tears, hard work, and success of their past was demolished in a matter of minutes with the power of water, leaving behind a muddy trail of broken hearts and soggy dreams.

We are all children of God struggling to return to our heavenly home and I hope we can keep our brothers and sisters in Japan in our hearts and prayers as they make the terrifying trek back to stability.

I was asked to teach in Relief Society this week and preparing for my lesson on talents and the value in discovering your strengths I came across this video that really touched my heart. Please take a few minutes to watch it and listen to the beautiful reminder it provides that we are meant on this earth to create things: art, music, friendships, delicious cuisine, education, talents, testimonies, faith, homes, and families.

The beauty in this life is that we have countless opportunities to stop and try again if we need to. We are constantly given the time and chance to start fresh or start something new. Find your passion. Strength. Talent. Do it. Over and over again so you can continue making masterpieces each day and blessing those around you as you build yourself up. Someday you will be able to look at your life and think "wow, well this was all worth it" because you'll then see the monument you have molded yourself into with each simple creation along the way.

In case you guys didn't already know shade clothing is back in business. naturally I get the newsletter so as soon as I got an email they were alive again I went a bought a few things I been waiting for. here's some things you guys NEED to know about

these leggings are heaven. they feel like butter, but are thick enough for coverage. they also have a thick comfy waistband, similar to my other favs

I was worried about this one. It looked like a great idea but I wasn't sure it would live up, however it TOTALLY did. Its really comfortable and is perfect for when you have something a little low cut, or need extra coverage with a dress/top under the arms. know what I mean? sometimes i just need a little something as an under layer without the extra bulk. this is a life saver!

I also got one of these layer tees. shade has a few different kinds of tops now.

this one had cute hemmed trim and fits great.

I've always liked shade but I was exceptionally pleased with my latest purchases and just bought a few more items.

so has anyone heard of this skincare company? My father in law recently went into business with them and I just got a big huge starter kit for their Obagi C RX system and I'm so excited to try it! I feel humbled because when I first saw their product I saw the older samples that are meant for older women and men- more of an anti- aging prescription grade without-the-prescription-looking bottle and I'm ashamed to say that I made fun of them and called the bottles old fashioned. I say ashamed because I really had no experience with the product, I didn't know who it was for or what it looked like or what it does... and then I got this starter kit (which retails for like 300 dollars- for free.) and it's for younger skin, and it came with a cute plum bag, and all the products are infused with Vitamin C which is the only antioxidant that helps your skin produce collagen (makes it firm and pretty). I'll let you know what the product does to my face after I use it for a while, I have really sensitive skin so it's hard for me to pick something new, but if it works for me I stick with it FOREVER. It would be nice to have all my face care in ONE brand, so that I don't have to go to ten different companies for ten different products that haven't been tested together. Does anybody else know anything about this company or know anyone who uses their products? I bet I could hook them up with awesome coupons and samples and stuff, Obagi is super loyal to it's costumers- who are super loyal to them back! I'm not trying to toot my dad's horn, I'm just being honest. So if you are looking for a new skin product, you should try obagi. It used to only be prescribed by dermatologists, but now it's on the market for every type of skincare you can imagine. Get some! or just check it out here

a goal of mine for a LONG time has been to be more informed about what is going on in world, specifically the running of our great country. the problem is that is a lofty goal when you try to go from knowing relatively little to being informed in one bound. I try and read articles, but with out more context/back-story on the event it's hard to grasp what the heck anyone is talking about.

can any of you intelligent/informed woman recommend a good ,preferably unbiased, blog or website that gives the basics on current events? I'm for looking simple breakdowns so I can start learning more, you know a good jumping off place... that's what I need.

So we all know that with lovely winter comes dry skin, HAIR, and nails. I am not an expert in too many things, but hair is one of my specialties. From Paul Mitchell, to Warren Tricomi (nyc), to Byu-ti Salon (santa monica). I swear I have tried every hair product out there. I was forever on the hunt for a deep conditioning treatment that actually worked and lasted. One that really penetrated deep into my hair and actually fixed the problem. Well I found it!

1. Pureology Hydrate HydraCure hair masque (purple bottle) use on thin/regular-thick hair

2. Pureology super smooth relaxing hair masque (pink bottle) use on coarse/ really thick/ frizzy-curly hair

3. Pureology Shine max- one of my very favorite styling products I use it on ALL hair types and love, did I mention love it. It helps with frizz and shininess. I use it on damp hair before I blow it out and a few drops when its dry to seal off my blow-dry.

how to use: Shampoo your hair, ring out water with hands, apply masque, comb through to make sure it is evenly dispersed. clip up hair and leave on for as long as you can. 10 min, 1 hour, or some of my clients even sleep in it and rinse it out in the morning. The more you use it, the better results you will see. Every single one of my clients is addicted to this product. See if you can get a girlfriend who does hair to buy it for you at the supply store. We can get it for half the price of what they sell it in stores. Also, it will last you forever, it took me 8 months to go through one jar. Hope you enjoy!

Every winter, my hair becomes a nightmare of static. I love living at the base of the mountains in Utah, but I LOATHE what it does to my hair.

My sister solves it by not washing her hair every day. I, unfortunately, inherited the yucky genes; if I don't wash it every day, I'm stuck with dandruff (eww!) or oily scalp (eww again!).

So ladies--I seek your help. I am still a starving college student, so I need an inexpensive solution: what do you/did you do to get rid of frizz?!? Do you have any magical shampoo/conditioners that you love? or a home remedy?!

There are 3 other books in the series, but I haven't read them yet. But I hear they are equally fantastic. :D So...if you are looking for something light, charming, and even the tiniest bit inspiring, check out The Goose Girl.

Shannon Hale also wrote The Princess Academy, which is another fantastic read.

Revamp Ikea

I like Ikea. Call it what you want, it works, especially for city dwellers. There are not many places where you can buy stuff that doesn't look too terrible and have it be as cheap as Ikea is. However, sometimes, the ol' birch veneer just doesn't quite cut it. I am going to attempt this weekend to repaint one of our Ikea bookcases and found this handy little how-to guide online......if you care to join me in my attempt this weekend....I will let you know how it goes.

How to Paint Ikea Furniture

"Painting is a great way to add some personality to your furniture by hiding the cheap, Swedish, utilitarian vibe. Ikea's material of choice is usually particleboard covered in a faux-wood veneer, so getting the paint to stick is your biggest challenge.

The required supplies are cheap and available at your local hardware store.

-Rollerbrush or paintbrush

-Paint Tray

-Plastic drop cloth (newspaper will work fine if you're painting outdoors)

-Water-based primer

-Indoor hi-gloss latex paint

1. Disassemble your piece as much as possible. I chose to makeover my little birch BILLY bookcase.

2. Hold on to all your hardware. Remove the nails securing the back panel, then slide it up out and out of the track along the frame's edges. Use a damp sponge to wipe the dust from all the surfaces you'll be painting.

3. Use your roller to coat each side of the shelves, frame, and back panel. Stand the frame upright and you'll be able to reach all sides. You'll only need to paint the front of the back panel, and the shelves can be turned over, and edges painted after one side of the shelf has dried for a few hours. Let the whole thing dry overnight.

4. Cover each side with a coat of latex paint. Let dry 4-6 hours before applying another coat. 4-6 more hours and another coat should be all you need (although you can skip that third coat if you're lazy like me).

5. I chose to paint the back panel a bright blue to stand out against the stark, glossy white of the shelf. The idea is to have the whole thing blend in with the white wall, with a peek of the blue back panel over my books giving an unexpected splash of color. If you really want to give your bookcase a unique look, use wallpaper to cover the back panel. Bright geometric patterns look best, but anything will work.

When you've given all pieces ample drying time, reassemble the unit. If yours is a little wobbly like the BILLY I've dragged to 5 apartments in the 7 years I've lived on my own, you can take this time to reinforce everything. Hammer in nails to keep particleboard pieces from chipping away and losing their grip on other parts."

I wanted to share this wonderful site with you all. A friend of mine is one of the creators, and I have found it to be an incredible, daily inspiration. In a few words, it is a site where people can share the wonderful, happy things about being members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For those who are not LDS, it is a site where they can see what LDS people feel, think, and believe when it comes to the church. It's a wonderful, testimony building site. Are you searching for the perfect Easter Dessert? Search no further... Last year i made this Carrotcake Cheese Cake, and it turned out to be just as delightful as i had hoped! Happy Easter!

Ingredients:

1 2-layer-size carrot cake mix

1 cup water

1/2 cup cooking oil

6 eggs

1/2 cup Sun Maid® Raisins (I left these out)

3 8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

2 tsp. vanilla

Nonstick cooking spray

2 Tbsp. powdered sugar

1 Tbsp. water

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (I left these out too Since Dev hates nuts!)

1 cup powdered sugar

3 to 4 tsp. milk

Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a 10-inch springform pan; set aside. In a large bowl combine carrot cake mix, water, oil, and 3 of the eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping sides of bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Fold in raisins. Pour into prepared springform pan. In another large bowl beat cream cheese with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Beat in granulated sugar and vanilla until smooth. Beat in remaining 3 eggs just until combined. Slowly pour over carrot cake layer. Use a thin metal spatula to gently swirl the batters. Place cheesecake on a baking sheet. Bake for 70 to 80 minutes or until top is set except for a 1-inch circle in the center. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Using a small sharp knife, loosen the cake from the sides of the pan. Cool for 30 minutes. Remove sides of pan; cool cheesecake completely on rack. Cover and chill at least 4 hours before serving. Line a small baking pan with foil; lightly coat foil with nonstick spray. In a small bowl combine 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, the water, and cinnamon. Stir in walnuts. Spread in an even layer in the prepared baking pan. Bake in a 325°F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until nuts are lightly toasted, stirring once. Cool completely. In a medium bowl combine 1 cup powdered sugar and enough of the milk to make drizzling consistency. Cut cheesecake into wedges and place each wedges on a serving plate. Drizzle each serving with some of the powdered sugar icing. Break up walnuts and place atop cheesecake wedges. Makes 16 servings

I promised I would post this really easy and yummy busy day recipe. We affectionately call it Mormon Mama dinner, but it is really a taco casserole.
You can cut it in half for two people. Gravel is pre-cooked hamburger that is frozen ahead for easy use. Cook up a batch of lean hamburger with chopped onion and what ever seasoning you like. Then freeze it on a cookie sheet. After it is frozen, break it up and put it all in a Ziplock bag for future use. You can use a little in soup or spaghetti sauce or what ever you need for taco salad, enchiladas etc. Of course, you can cook up fresh hamburger for this recipe too.

Cover the bottom of a 9 x13” baking dish with a layer of crushed tortilla or corn chips (Fritos)
Follow with a layer of hamburger gravel, then a layer of chopped tomatoes, and then a layer of chopped lettuce
Cover the lettuce with two 16 oz. cans of chili (with or without beans) the chili spreads more smoothly if it has been removed form the can first and slightly warmed.
Then top the whole dish with shredded cheddar or Monterey jack cheese
Bake at 300 degrees for 45 minutes

Great with fresh fruit or corn on the cob and warm rolls!!

How do you feel about beets? I have never been a fan until I tried this salad. Oh.My. It is absolutely delicious. I still keep the beet count a little light as I like more sweet potato than beet, but all combined it is delicious and so pretty! I brought it to a party and it looked and tasted good, so I felt that it should be shared.

Chop the pears, sweet potatoes, and beets into nice bite size chunks

If you don't wear gloves you will stain your hands. I'm at peace with it.

After an hour of roasting, the aroma is divine.

Sweet Potato Salad
2 lbs sweet potato
1-2 beets
2 pears
10 Fresh Sage leaves
10 fresh Tarragon leaves
(if you don't have the fresh herbs, it tastes just fine with sage/tarragon from your spice rack)
Olive Oil

Preheat oven to 375
Chop sweet potatoes, beats, and pears into similar size chunks
Spread vegetables out on a roasting pan
toss the vegetables with some olive oil
Add chopped Tarragon and sage
Cover dish with foil
Bake for about 45-60 minutes or until the vegetables are soft

THEN, because you ate all your vegetables you can eat as many Cadbury mini eggs out of your candy jar as you want.

ok so i'll start by prefacing this post with a story.

yesterday i was jamming to my ipod thinking about how much i love the city when I looked out the window of the bus i was on and realized i had totally missed my stop. I was only one ave down so I jumped off quickly and started up the street. When i rounded the corner to my street I reached into my bag to garb my keys... When I got my new job I splurged on a Marc Jacobs key chain/mini wallet that I could carry my work pass and metro-card in. Today I had put some cash in it as well as my debit card. So in total it contained: both house keys, the only mailbox key, my work ID and security pass, my debit card, cash, my flash drive, my gym pass, me monthly metro-card and my flash drive. so anyways, I reach in my purse and its NOT THERE! then I remember it was on my lap in the bus and I jumped up since I missed my stop. It must have fallen on the floor. so I jump in cab and tell him to head up Amsterdam (even though the bus runs parallel on riverside I thought we could catch up to it taking the faster street)After about 10 blocks I just guessed about how far up the bus had gotten and tell the driver to cross over to Riverside. I told him I left my wallet on the bus and to look for a bus ahead of us and then catch up as fast as he can. When we turn we see one a few blocks behind us but I think no that can't be it the bus I went on would have been further up. So we head uptown and we are racing down the street and no bus in sight. Then I think maybe it is the bus behind us, great, by now someone has def taken it and Ill have to wait in the cold 20 mins for that bus to catch up to where I am now to even see if it's there. Just as we are heading to 116 st and I'm about to give up we see a bus! The taxi driver tells me just to jump out and look on the bus before it drives away. So I do. He honks at the bus so it doesn't leave. I jump in the bus and tell the driver I need to look for my wallet. I go to the back where I was sitting and the woman there says "oh someone found it" a had woman picked it up and was asking for the owner but she just got off the bus. ON THE LAST STOP. I missed her by 4 blocks. The people on the bus said she was really nice and they thought she would find me, but I knew there wasn't anything in my wallet that would help her unless she was really aggressive. So I gave up hope. When I got to work the next morning I was knew deep in canceling my cards and getting replacements. I was trying to reach our super about the keys when my personal line rang from an outside number. Which never really happens. When I answered a sweet woman said "Hi my name is Krystal I found your wallet on the bus. " I was so happy! She said she had tried everything, looking my up on facebook, calling the gym, and the bank. She was afraid if she left it with the bank or with the bus driver that it would never get back to me, or only half of it would. She said finally she thought to Google the name of the property management company on my work ID, which was a long shot because Boston Properties owns A LOT of BUILDINGS. However they were able to give the office directory and told her to talk to Ken. (who works in my office) But when she heard my name she just dialed my directly. TA DA.

Now I realize that was a long painful story for most of you who don't care about my little tragedy turned triumph, but there is a bigger picture! There are two actually. The first is Karma. Even in the big city there are kind strangers who will do the right thing. If you do the right things people will do them for you too. The second of course is protect yourself. Check you have everything before you get off the bus, keep your purse zipped,and even if you live in Rexburg lock your door. This morning I made a list/copy of everything important in my wallet so if I ever lost it I'd know what was gone and what to cancel/replace. Here's tips from a good article I read about protecting yourself before your wallet gets lost:

Step 1

Have contact information for all of your accounts stored in a safe place.

Having quick access to your account numbers and contact information for the issuing institutions may allow you to cancel your accounts more quickly before the thief is able to do his damage.

Step 2

Have your work contact information printed on your checks.

This is safer than having your home address listed on your checks. You don't want a thief to pay a personal visit to your home to rob you. Also avoid printing your driver's license and social security number on your checks.

Step 3

Get a non-debit ATM card.

If your ATM card should be stolen, the thief would be able to use the debit function of your card for purchases unless you have one without this feature. Most banks automatically issue ATM cards with debit capabilities. Ask your bank for a non-debit card instead.

Step 4

Make a copy of everything in your wallet.

Make a photocopy of everything you carry in your wallet and store it in a safe place .If your wallet should be stolen, you'll have this important information handy to report to the different credit agencies as well as the police.

Step 5

Always have an emergency credit card at home.

If your wallet is stolen and you have to cancel your credit cards, you'll need a credit card available to make purchases. Although most credit card companies can issue a new card for you quickly, most can't provide same day service since the new card has to reach you by mail. If you have a separate credit card account, you store your reserve card in a safe place in case you need it.

Step 6

Minimize the number of items you carry in your wallet. If you carry business cards in your wallet, the thief will have instant access to where you work and what you do. Likewise, if you carry your social security card in your wallet, they'll also have knowledge of your social security number. Try to minimize the amount of paperwork and documentation you carry in your wallet on a daily basis. If you must carry your business card with you, store it in a separate area. Another option is to have a separate smaller wallet with just the essentials. You can use this wallet when you're going out on the town or into a situation where the risk of having your wallet stolen is higher.

most of the women reading this have probably eaten a Ben's cookie in London or gone to what is now called bear country cookies in SLC, but for those of you who haven't good news. I just found this little treatie mc treaterton.

I'm going to see how close I can get the recipe to taste like the real thing this weekend, but the best news is if if doesn't work I can buy a box for 20.00 and let me tell you that is a steal. no one believes me when i say these are the best cookies ever made, until they try them. I'm telling the truth here people they will CHANGE your life. I think I might buy the cookie mix too...

Happy St. Patrick's! (Almost)

St. Patrick's is always a fun holiday at my house, as it is also my mom's birthday. Tradition requires that we have corned beef and cabbage: traditional Irish food. She makes this fabulous dinner and we all shower her with love and presents--I'd say it's a good deal.

This year, Derek and I will have dinner at my parents and enjoy the lovely Irish heritage meal. But I realized today, that I have NO idea how to make corned beef! So, my goal this year: to learn! What am I going to do with my own kids when my mom is far away? I have to be self-sufficient, I suppose.

St. Patrick's also means the coming of green. I am a huge fan of winter, but I must admit-those first signs of spring, snow drops and crocuses, make me feel giddy for a change. I'm looking forward to green on the trees, carpets of green on the ground, and fabulous springs colors in my wardrobe (yay!).

So, Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Kaitlyn just added me and this isn't even a really fun post, but something I was thinking about today.

This morning while I was in half awake/half sleepland I noticed the bed shaking a little. I sat straight up and panicked because I thought maybe my husband was having a seizure or something. He wasn't, just scratching his belly apparently, but it scared me and prompted me to look up what to do if something like that (a seizure, not the belly scratching) happens. So I share this with you:

What to do if someone is having a seizure:

Loosen clothing around the person's neck.
Do not try to hold the person down or restrain him or her, this can result in injury.
Do not insert any objects in the person's mouth; this can also cause injury.
Reassure bystanders who may be panicking and ask them to give the person room.
Remove sharp objects (glasses, furniture, and other objects) from around the person to prevent injury.
After the seizure, it is helpful to lay the person on his or her side to maintain an open airway and prevent the person from inhaling any secretions.
After many seizures, there may be confusion for a period of time and the person should not be left alone.
In many cases, especially if the person is known to have epilepsy, it is not necessary to call an ambulance. If the seizure lasts longer than five minutes, or if another seizure begins soon after the first, or if the person cannot be awakened after the movements have stopped, an ambulance should be called. If you are concerned that something else may be wrong, or the person has another medical condition such as heart disease or diabetes, you should contact a doctor immediately.

It also got me thinking about other emergencies that I "sort of" know how to react to. One thing that scares me is choking. Especially when I have children. I looked it up and found an in depth article, complete with visuals, that can be found on WebMD. Click Here to read.

I would encourage everyone to freshen up on their first-aid training. the firstaid.webmd site is really helpful. It talks about Burns, Poisoning, and Dealing with Emergencies. You never know what could happen tomorrow, so it is always best to be prepared. I think I'm going to go home today and get a small 72 hour kit together that I can put right under my bed in case I need to grab it really fast someday.

I have been pondering this very question a lot lately, as my life with two little boys gets busier and more demanding. It reminds me of Stephen Covey’s question about who would attend our funeral if we died and what would the eulogist say. Kind of a morbid question, but great for really making us think about how we want to be remembered. Lately, I have been struggling with balance. My husband works insane hours, so I feel often like it’s all up to me. Do I fold the 4 loads of laundry or play Mouse Trap with my son? It seems simple here as I type it, but it’s complicated and I am beyond tired. At the end of each day, I come back to the very question that Kaitlyn posted about – how will I be remembered? How will my kids remember me (and their childhood)? Was I the warm mom who gave them lots of love and attention, or was I frazzled – never getting to things and always responding to their requests with “in a minute” (while that minute never comes)? My resolve – balance better and be better, starting today – stop and really see these two darling boys in the moment every day.

I am so inspired by all of the women on this blog. Often I am reading the posts at midnight when my house is quiet, but it gives me a lot of think about. I don’t post often, but I think about it and I write posts in my mind.

Kaitlyn, you are amazing. I loved what you wrote about me. It actually made me cry. If I had read it without my name, I wouldn’t have known you were writing about me – so obviously, I need to work on some things. But somehow, knowing that you see me that way pushes me to be better, more like your kind words described me. I needed to read those words this week.

kaitlyn is… spreading love and light where ever she goes, literally. and, she is the most memorable babysitter - as evidenced by the fact that Lucas still talks about her - almost two years later. she loves kids and they know it. she is always smiling, and when she talks to you, it is like you are the only person in the world at that moment.

Inspired!

It got me thinking, of course, about how I want others to remember me. This led to what I will remember about a few of the special people in my life who share this blog. (I wish I could write about everyone right now and I will in the future because I’ve been blessed with great friends and family) I think it has the makings for a really good blog fest. Comment with your thoughts and or write your own post about how you want to be remembered.

Here’s how I'd like to be remembered:
- she loved the church & the Lord
- she considered others’ feelings, & loved to make people happy
- she was passionate
- she put her children first
- she knew how to have fun & she knew how to get things done
- she supported her husband & family be trying to be a better woman

- she never gives up, she sees her potential to accomplish something has actually does it. I don't think I've ever done that in my life

shalyce is… making warm bread sticks
- she maintains perspective. she knows the value of hard work and sacrifice for long term rewards. I can be a very here and now kind of girl I wish I could keep me eyes on the whole picture more, like shay.
- she makes you feel comfortable around her. I’m not sure what it is but I just feel like I can totally be myself, whatever I may do and it’s not weird and I think im not the only person who would say that about shay.

diana is… discovering life’s soundtrack
-she’s loyal friend, she'd never leave you behind. I remember one time in college when I was really down and di offered to stay home that night. I always think about that time when I’m trying to be a good friend.
- she is a music lover, she always seeking after and sharing good music is just a reflection of how truly individual I think she is.

mom is… helping others breathe easier
- she listens to others. I never heard someone listen as long and as hard as my mom does when her family and friends come to her with cares, concerns, sorrows or joys.
- she has a healers touch. I’ve been so grateful all my life to have a mother who is a nurse by profession and by nature.

mackenzie is… at the children’s library on a rainy day
- she has the attitude, she loves new york. you’d think that would be easy to do because NYC is so awesome right, but its not. This city can rock your world and it’s hard to maintain a positive attitude about it.
-she is a loving mom. you can tell how much she loves her boys, but she doesn’t put it all up in your face. I guess a better way to say it is that she knows when to go with the flow and when to be a little more mama bear. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone else but it just reminds me of the kind of mom I want to be. Can I just say cool, she’s cool. She’s a cool person and she’s just a cool mom. (I’m pretty sure that makes me sound like a teenager but it’s the truth, she is!)

keri is… chasing a pony in a wide open field
- she is opinionated,she takes the time to educated herself on things that matter to her. I really like this because I get heated up about things I know nothing about and its not impressive. Keri on the other hand actually knows stuff.
- she is an excellent cook/baker. she really has a natural talent and she makes it look so easy the little butthead. Haha I only say that because I try so hard and its just not in me. I know she worked hard at it too though and she has defiantly cultivated a skill. She really took what God gave her and made it grow.

This morning I was making my usual blog rounds and spotted a fun post at the Inspired Room. First it just made me miss London, having peppermint tea at The Orangery, but then I got inspired. Spring is not too far away and I'm having a tea party, too bad we all live so far apart or we could have one together. In the meantime I think I'll hit a couple flea markets and add to my collection of tea accessories.

So i absolutely LOVE V a l e n t i n e s d a y .

I don't mind the overload of chocolate, I don't mind plucking flowers from the pits of their soil comforts and sticking them onto a shelf for a lengthy execution. I don't mind being alone. I don't mind serving happy --cutie-- oooooober sweet romantic .b.l.i.s.s.f.u.l. couples at work. I don't mind the overpriced candy that's been a necessity since 3rd grade. I don't even mind the sidewalkchalk tasting candy hearts engraved with artificial flavors and miraculously never tastes different, even when they're 1,000 years old and so stale the dust in the bottom of the cardboard container is being considered and examines at the Natural History Museum. I don't mind the overpriced greeting cards or required elementary school hand outs you give, even to the smelly kid who you KNOW secretly pees in the class science project plant pot. I don't mind the plastic hearts and the balloons. I don't mind the array of rose petals.

Big Plans?

So, Derek and I will be rather boring this Valentine's Day, since we're saving every penny and sixpence for Europe. We're planning on a lovely dinner at home (well, he doesn't know that! hehe, won't he be surprised!) and our Stake Dance on Saturday. Yes, our lovely BYU young married stake is having a Valentine's Semi-formal dance, complete with DJ and chocolate fountain. :) Sometimes, I just have to laugh at the stereotypical events we participate in as Mormons at BYU. The fabulous (and hilarious) thing is, we're both really looking forward to it! Dancing with my hubby, chocolate, and an excuse to dress up--my favorite.

What are you fabulous plans for Valentine's Day this year?

You know how every climactic kiss in the movies seems to be--perfect? Beautiful, wonderful, wish-it-were-you kind of kiss? My sisters and I were discussing cinematic kisses the other day, and we have decided the most romantic, beautiful kiss from our generation of movies, is from Never Been Kissed. I just envy the beauty, the sincerity,--and honestly, the audience. It's just..adorable.

But what do you think?

For me this Valentine's Day is a special one. My first as a Mrs. with someone to really call mine. I'm so exicted and fully intend to get carried away with the festivities. I always love Valentines because I love pink and I love LOVE, its my kind of holiday. What I really love about it is the fact is a celebration of all the people you care about, not just your mom on mother's day. It's the chance to show the ones you love that you care. I'm a big fan of crafts and notes as a medium for showing affection and appreciation. Let's share ideas here...

Yummy Mint Goodness

My mother used to make butter mints all the time at Christmas. You know, the little pillow-like pieces of sugar that taste of minty goodness. Derek and I made some last night, and I must admit: I forgot how wonderful even the dough is! It's the easiest recipe on the planet and SOO good-great to add to that plate of cookies you take your friends and neighbors.

Butter Mints
1/4 cup of butter-nearly melted
3 oz. cream cheese
1lb powdered sugar
1/4 tsp mint extract

Mix all ingredients together. Add food coloring if desired. Then, roll dough out into thin snakes and cut into pieces with butter knife. Set on wax paper to dry out for about 24 hours. ENJOY.

Chef Diaries: Halloween Themed

First there was dinner in a pumpkin... I can't figure out where I put the recipe, mom would you please post it when you have minute?? Anyways it's a yummy dish cooked in a pumpkin. Our local market was out of big pumpkins so I opted for two little guys, the boy for J and the girl for me! It was a fun time!

Then there was Halloween Shepard's Pie on Sunday. Tasty and so fun to make, but if you are doing the mashed potatoes from scratch they have to be completely smooth for the ghosts. This was my one fall down on this dish, but I made it work! Try it, fun fun!

Snickers Salad

Ingredients:

Snickers Bar

Red and green apples

Strawberry yogurt

Directions:

cut apples into slices

combine yogurt and snickers bar and blend

put the apples into the yougurt mixture and stir

Enjoy! i learned this at young women's and loved it!

Chocolate Rolo Cookies

This is my sister stephanie's recipe. I made them myself for the first time last night. They are so good & so simple. I am a horrible cookie maker, unless they come in premade squares. My cookies always come out so flat but these turned out perfect!

1 Chocolate Cake Mix

I used the exact kind that is in the picture above. Betty Crocker, Tripple Chocolate Fudge

2 Eggs

1/3 Cup Oil

1 bag of Rolos

Don't follow the directions on the back of the cake box, just add the mix, eggs, and oil. Take a ball of dough a little bigger than a rolo and wrap it around a rolo. Back at 8 min @ 350 degrees on a greased cookie sheet. It made about 30 cookies. Kaitlyn and anyone else that loves chocolate and rolos, you must do this ASAP and report back to me. Its a bit of heaven on hearth. Love you all!

In Keeping With Our Pumpkin Theme

Here is a great recipe I am making for a Bridal shower. It's easy too!

Pumpkin Bars

2 C. flour

2 C. sugar

2 t. baking powder

1 t. baking soda

1 t. cinnamon

1 t. nutmeg

1 t. cloves

1/2 t. salt

1 C. oil

15 oz. can of pumpkin

4 eggs

Frosting

2 C. powdered sugar

1/3 C. butter softened

3 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened

1 T. milk

1 t. vanilla

(combine ingredients and beat until smooth)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 15 X 10 in. jelly roll pan. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. In large bowl, blend all bar ingredients at low speed until moistened.

Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool and then frost. 48 bars (you can freeze some)

Pumkin Soup with Chili Cran-Apple Relish

Hi ladies. Hope you are all enjoying this beautiful Fall weather. I love fall - perhaps the most.

A friend recently told me about this recipe by Rachel Ray. I made it last week and proceeded to eat it all (almost) by myself. It was delicious. I am going to have to make it again soon!

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
2 tablespoons butter
1 fresh bay leaf
2 ribs celery with greens, finely chopped (save time and purchase celery already washed, trimmed and cut into sticks, this makes chopping fast work)
1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons poultry seasoning or 2 teaspoons ground thyme
2 teaspoons hot sauce, or to taste
6 cups chicken stock
1 (28-ounce) can cooked pumpkin puree
2 cups heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Relish:

1 crisp apple, such as McIntosh or Granny Smith, finely chopped
1/4 red onion, finely chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries, chopped
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

Heat a medium soup pot over medium to medium high heat. Add the oil and melt the butter. Add bay, celery, and onion. Season the veggies with salt and pepper. Cook 6 or 7 minutes, until tender. Add flour, poultry seasoning and hot sauce, to taste, then cook flour a minute. Whisk in chicken stock and bring liquid to a bubble. Whisk in pumpkin in large spoonfuls to incorporate it into the broth. Simmer soup 10 minutes to thicken a bit then add in cream and nutmeg. Reduce heat to low and keep warm until ready to serve.

While soup cooks, assemble the relish: combine apple, onion, lemon juice, cranberries, chili powder, honey and cinnamon.

Adjust seasonings in soup and relish and serve soup in shallow bowls with a few spoonfuls of relish.

I read Kaitlyn's post literally 10min after I had made Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins... kinda made me laugh that we were both feeling the same fall vibe. Anywayz, I dont claim to be a master chef in any way, in fact im still learning, but here is the recipe i made today with a few of my favorite fall to do's...

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins/Bread

1 3/4 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

2 eggs

1 cup pumpkin pie filling

1/2 cup softened butter

1 cup sugar

1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup chocolate chips (I used milk chocolate instead of semi-sweet, but either will work.)

Preheat oven to 350. Grease muffin tin or bread pan. Bake mini muffins about 10min. large muffins 15-20min. and mini loaves for 20-30min. Let cool and enjoy!

Fall Things i heart: Coraline (just redboxed it and loved it), The Nightmare Before Christmas (We like to watch this at Halloween & Christmas!), Sweet November, Harry Potter and the Socerers Stone, going to The Pumpkin patch, White hot Chocolate from Starbucks, picking apples from Apple Orchards (One thing i miss about upstate NewYork) and making homemade apple cider, Pumpkin Spice doughnut from Krispy Kreme, Straw Mazes, Homemade Soup, Cozy Socks, Light Coat Weather... and recently, the changing leaves on Mt. Timp.

It is not yet soup weather here in California, but I made this for enrichment last night and it was really good and easy!

Chicken Cheese Chowder

2T butter 1/2 tsp dried marjoram

1 large potato, diced 1 cup diced cooked chicken

1 onion, chopped 1 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed

1/4 cup flour salt and pepper, fresh parsley, to taste

2 1/2 cup chicken broth 1 cup shredded or cubed cheddar cheese

1 1/4 cup milk

1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add potato and onion; cook, stirring often, for 10 minutes. Blend in the flour and cook for 1 minute stirring constantly. Add the broth, milk, Worcestershire sauce and marjoram. Stir until slightly thick and bubbly. Stir in the chicken and corn to heat through. Add parsley and salt and pepper. Stir in cheese until blended just before serving.

Adventures In Zucchini Soup!

It all started with some zucchini... and the smoke alarm going off due to a small kitchen, weak stove fan, and too many items on the stove...

I was making my way through the first few recipe steps with ease. I even found the fat free half and half (as recommended, I was determine to follow the recipe exactly because I truly don't trust myself as a cook at all!)

I decided I would cook the chicken Jordan had bought at the store to go with our tasty soup. This is where we hit problem number one. Too much chicken to try to cook on a small pan while trying to manage soup. Note to self: (and all you guys reading this) If the item you are cooking is too thick the bottom will completely burn before you have cooked through to the middle! Further more too much olive oil in a hot pan will cause little oil drops to jump up and burst on your arms while you are trying mash zucchinis. But somehow I salvaged that whole situation and made it through the veggie steps for the soap and onto the sauce...

When the spoon I had sitting in the pot ,while I was getting out dishes, decided to jump out of the pot and sit on the floor... TWICE! (don't worry it was washed in between)

The results of which you can see below. Again note to self: (and everyone reading) As a beginning cook trying to melt butter while adding flour and various other ingredients I should be very precise on the timing of such a process or the mixture may or may not come out very lumpy and awkward.

I call these Soup On Floor and Soup On Pants... just two of this seasons latest in the Ray Home.

HOWEVER... When all was said and done, the soup was AMAZING, if I do say so myself and I do. A HUGE thanks to Mackenzie & friends recipe for delighting my taste buds and teaching me big lessons in the kitchen! I always feel proud when Jordan asks for seconds :) I think I will make zucchini soup again soon! You ladies should try it too, see recipe in post below!
